Lock 44 The Big Chute

We are sitting on the bow throughout this entire process. One of the Canadian gentleman offered to take our camera and get these shots for us. (And we got the camera back -- we knew we weren't in New York) This is a 57' drop. The lift can carry 110 tons and vessels up to 100' in length. It is a complex system of straps and rams and it carries a combination of boats. As you saw in the last shot, they aren't all as even keeled as the Dubhe was in this shot. Other than the vibration of the lift on the rails, it was a relatively smooth transition and quite an experience. We marveled at the ingenuity of this and the locking system in general.
